Riding Motorcycles – DD15

Play

Dom loves riding motorcycles.  He has been riding bikes since he was a teenager.  In the episode, Dom talks about the types of bikes he has rode and the types he doesn’t like.

ChopperCrusing BikeTo the left is a chopper and to the right is a cruising bike.  The difference between the two (2) bikes is that a chopper, the frame of the bike has been cut or modified in some way, usually the forks are extended.  Dom has never ridden a chopper, but he loves riding cruising bikes.

Mini BikeDirt BikeTo the left is a mini bike and to the right is a dirt bike.  Dom has never ridden a mini bike, but the first bike he ever rode was a dirt bike similar to the bike on the right out at his great uncle’s farm.  He used to ride this bike all through the fields and all around his great uncle’s farm.

Touring BikeBullet BikeOn the left is a touring bike and on the right is a bullet bike.  These two (2) types of bikes Dom isn’t very fond of.  He’s never ridden them, but for him, they just don’t look very comfortable.  Everybody he has talked to, they say that at least with the bullet bike, long road trips aren’t comfortable at all and cause people lower back pain.

Honda WaveTo the left is a Honda Wave 100cc.  Dom and Tracy used to own one of these also, and Dom was teaching Tracy how to ride a bike on it.  They also owned a Honda Phantom 200cc motorcycle, which is what they used for their two (2) road trips around northern Thailand.

Dom spends the remainder of the show talking about their road trips around northern Thailand.

Living In Chiang Mai – DD3

Play

Visiting Chiang Mai

Before Tracy and Dom moved to Chiang Mai, they went up there to have a look around first.  They rented a bike and got to know the city a bit and looked at places to rent.

First place was dangerous for Dom, as he would have smashed his head going up and down the stairs.  The second place was too massive and too far out for both Tracy and Dom to live.  Third place was perfect, had a small yard with a parking area, also, Tracy and Dom bring their two (2) cats, Roso & Lily with them to Chiang Mai, which the landlady says is fine.  Dom also explains a half bath, three quarters bath and a full bath for those that don’t know.

Moving To Chiang Mai

PhantomWaveOnce Tracy and Dom move to Chiang Mai, the first thing they need to do is get motorcycles.  Dom gets a Honda Phantom 200cc and Tracy gets a Honda Wave 110cc.  Dom talks about what it was like to try find a job by emailing language schools, but they don’t respond to him.  Tracy and Dom adopt their dog Spike.

Dom finds work at a few places in Chiang Mai before finally being hired by Tracy to work for the British Council in Chiang Mai.  Overall it was a good place for him to work, and was a great learning experience for him.

Motorcycle Trips

domphantomDom talks a little bit about their motorcycle trips.  They did two (2) trips around Northern Thailand.  For the first trip, they went from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai to Chiang Saen to Thaton to Chiang Dao finally back to Chiang Mai.  The second trip went from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai to Chiang Saen with a day trip to Chiang Khong, from Chiang Saen to Mae Sai to Thaton to Chaing Dao for lunch then back on the road to Chiang Mai.  Dom also talked a little bit about their motorcycle trip to Lhamphun and their motorcycle trip to Pai, and he talks about their time in Pai.
